The Daedalus Cycle

So, what is the Daedalus Cycle? I have tagged that name to quite a few books and stories lately. Therefore, I have felt the growing need to explain a bit, why it is I do this.

When I started writing, I began with the development of the characters, simply because I had a pretty good idea what a potential future might look like. That had been my job. For the most part, it was a fun job. Therefore the world was already there.

I soon realized that all of the characters I created existed in the same place and time. It was the future of our world as I imagined it at that point in time. Soon, the events began to connect, resonating within each other, entangled.

So, the Daedalus came about. It is a world written by three simple principles:

The first story I wrote in that universe was Decypher Me. It seemed as if it had been waiting for me to be written. From there, it spread. Now around thirty short stories exist and an additional three novels are in the final stages of release. If I am not writing this blog, I am still adding stories to this world almost daily. Also many never make it out there.

The short stories always worked as some kind of laboratory for me. I developed ideas, concepts, and characters there. I let them play around in my head, to find their place in a larger narrative that is centered around a program called DAEDALUS. Daedalus has the ability to shake up the status quo in the tech-dominated future but has ended up in the hands of the most unlikely leader of a rebellion—a young rebellious girl named Cypher.

Her story is what the novels tell. Some short stories close the gaps, but that is not all. Many side characters populate the short stories. Some will eventually join the main storyline, as others rise and fall within their own pieces. They allow me to explore aspects and ideas the book could hardly entertain.

What they all have in common is they live in the same world, a shared universe that portrays the future of this planet in the year 2040. This idea of the future is built on the principle that I have taken all the technology I know is developed somewhere out there and have taken it to the next level. I have imagined a world where all the future disruptions of our lives have already happened. It is a world where virtual realities are part of every day’s life, where AI’s run most of our day-to-day business and machines have created their own community. What I try to create is a realistic future. A possible future. Every bit of tech you encounter in my stories you will find somewhere out there in development. That is what the Daedalus Cycle is to me.

A story told in a future that might come to pass. A story about a young woman navigating the dangerous grounds of this future.
